Short Term Vacation Rentals (aka STVR, AirBnB, VRBO) are broadly defined as any rental less than 30 days. Some cities are more restrictive in their definition.

Most gated communities in the Coachella Valley do not allow STVR though their are exceptions in certain areas and developments.

The issue is controversial. Some homeowners are up in arms because their once quiet neighborhoods are turning into noisy hotel districts.  Others consider any kind of restriction on the type of rental they can do an infringement on their property rights.
